The seemlessly neverending saga of UFC 249 has taken another turn as ESPN’s Ariel Helwani is reporting that Justing Gaethje will now step in on 2 weeks notice to take on top lightweight contender Tony Ferguson.
UC 249 will take place as scheduled on April 19th. There is still no location announced as Dana White has been working to keep that information under wraps. It appears to be on the west coast but nothing has been confirmed at this point. California would be off the table as Gov Gavin Newson and the California State Athletic Commission has banned all MMA events through May 31. Nevada has banned them through April 25th. Rumors were circulating last week that the event would take place in Florida but they have also instituted a lockdown. Leaving the country will be off the table because no one will be able to get back in anytime soon. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
Khabib Nurmagomedov pulled out of the fight last week as he is on lockdown in his home country of Daegestan. Now, there will be an interim lightweight title match to determine who faces him later in the fall. Khabib will be unable to compete this summer due to ramadan.
