Come hell or high water, UFC 249 is taking place live tonight on ESPN + PPV with a main event Interim Lighweight Championship bout between top contender Tony Ferguson and veteran bruiser Justin Gaethje. The event was originally slated to take place back in April with a main event of Ferguson vs Lightweight Champ Khabib Nurmagadov but that ended up getting cancelled due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions. To this day Khabib is unable to come to America.
This is one of the deepest UFC cards in recent memory and it almost had to be. A lot of people feel uneasy with the fight taking place and that was even before Jacare got the rona. Plus tons of Americans are out of work and don’t have the expendable income to be dishing out dough for some crowd-less fights.
One thing the UFC has in its favor is that the world is starved for live sports. Its so bad in fact, I watched fucking Korean baseball the other day and couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. The uneasiness will wither away once the blood starts to spill on the mat. There will be a self-righteous few who will hate-watch and make the post-fight story about how much they disagree, but I will have my hypocritical ass plopped down in front of the TV and watch with sheer joy, all-the-while not agreeing with it taking place.
Interim Lightweight Championship
Tony Ferguson -190 vs. Justin Gaethje +160
The main event is almost guaranteed to deliver an exciting fight as both fighters come to put on a show. This honestly cant remember a fight between two fighters who consistently put on exciting fights like this.
Prediction: Tony Ferguson by decision
Henry Cejudo (c) -220 vs. Dominick Cruz +180
Cruz is coming off another super long layoff due to injury. Cruz is much older than Cejudo and did not look good in his last fight at all. I dont think Cruz has anything to offer Cejudo.
Prediction: Henry Cejudo by Ko
Francis Ngannou -280 vs. Jair Rozenstruik +230 — Heavyweights
This is another fight that promises to be a barn burner. Two big heavyweight bastards that love to slug who have something to prove.
Prediction: Rozenstruik by KO
Calvin Kattar -240 vs. Jeremy Stephens +200 — Featherweights
Jeremy Stephens missed weight by quite a bit and had to give up 20% of his purse.
Prediction: Overweight Stephens by decision
Greg Hardy -195 vs. Yorgan De Castro +165 — Heavyweights
Perennial piece of shit Greg Hardy is back taking on another job guy. He has asthma which puts him in the high risk category for COVID-19 so hopefully he hung out with Jacare this week.
Prediction: Hardy by KO
Anthony Pettis -150 vs. Donald Cerrone +125 — Welterweights
Cowboy has lost his last three fights and has not looked good at all. Pettis is hit or miss but usually does just enough to make you think hes still got it. But theres just something about Cowboy when he has his back against the wall that makes him fight better.
Prediction: Cowboy Cerrone by Decision
The rest of the card has some big names and former champions but I will refrain from picking because I have not looked too deeply on them.
- Vicente Luque -280 vs. Niko Price +230 — Welterweights
- Fabricio Werdum -330 vs. Aleksei Oleinik +260 — Heavyweights
- Carla Esparza -160 vs. Michelle Waterson +140 — Women’s strawweights
- Bryce Mitchell -165 vs. Charles Rosa +155 — Featherweights
- Ryan Spann -420 vs. Sam Alvey +330 — Light heavyweights
