The highly anticipated UFC Welterweight Title bout between champion Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns at UFC 256 has been officially postponed. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.
The fight was set to take place in the main event of UFC 256 on Dec 12. Usman reached out to the UFC brass and asked for a little more time. The fight could be rescheduled for January or February.
Rumors are already out there that this could be the spot for a McGregor return. Conor has already challenged former foe Dustin The Diamond Porier to a charity exhibition in December. After that challenge went public, Dana confirmed that the UFC has offered both men the fight for later this year. No new main event for 256 has been announced as of yet but that would be the perfect opportunity to close the year strong for the UFC. McGregor’s coach, John Kavanaugh seems interested:
McGregor and Poirier fought once before at UFC 178 back in 2014. The two were rising featherweights at the time and Conor secured an easy KO in the first round. That was the fight that pushed him to be a top contender (he ended up fighting Denis Sever a couple months later but that was a jobber fight)
